Tiaki Nga Wai O Hokianga

 Welcomes You

Our kaupapa is simple - to improve the health of the Hokianga Harbour by restoring the health of the waterways and catchments that flow into the harbour.

WHO ARE WE

Hokianga Harbor Care Incorporated is a charitable trust based in the South Hokianga and funded to deliver freshwater restoration projects on local rivers, streams and wetlands.

We grow eco sourced native trees to plant along waterways, recreate wetlands and stabilize erosion-prone hill country.

Our team does the mahi to establish and maintain planting sites, do weed control and provide expertise and support to work alongside landowners, the community, and collective aspirations.

Building capability and employment for tangata whenua and community is another important part of our mahi through engagement, education and the application of matauranga.

OUR PROJECT

Beginning as a volunteer organisation in 2017, we received funding from MPI 1 Billion Trees in 2020 for a three-year catchment restoration project in the South Hokianga.  Within 12 months we then secured further funding from Pub Charities, Foundation North and Ministry for the Environment Jobs For Nature - Freshwater Improvement Fund - to expand our work into a four-year project which is now completed.
During those four years we delivered riparian restoration projects in almost every catchment in South Hokianga, establishing over 100 restoration sites on more than 90 properties from the Waihou River through to the Waimamaku River.

Over the four years our project completed

- Produced close to 400,000 plants in our nurseries
- Established 87.73ha of planting with over 256,000 Eco sourced native plants
- Built 72km of fences
- Undertook 60 hectares of pest plant control
- Held over 70 hui, workshops, volunteer days, and school engagement events across the entire
community.
- Provided full or part-time employment for 32 people from the local community
- Successfully implemented succession planning to allow development of our team into leadership
positions in HHCI or in other groups we work with.
- Established long-lasting and strategic relationships with other community groups and organisations
that have provided opportunities for growth and development. This has enabled us to transition into
a new project cycle with our team intact and resourced to keep doing our mahi.

As a non-profit, funded organisation we survive due to the generosity and support of our community. We are extremely grateful to our funders and other sources of donations and sponsorships which all helps us to meet our goals and helps us contribute to the health of the Hokianga Harbour.
