Karamu
DESCRIPTION
Coprosma robusta, or karamu, is a native, evergreen shrub endemic to New Zealand.
It is found throughout New Zealand in a variety of habitats, including forests, shrublands, wetlands, and coastal areas. It is adaptable and can grow in a wide range of soil conditions.
Karamu can grow up to 8 meters in height with a spread of 2-3 meters. The leaves are dark green and glossy, and the plant produces small, round berries that turn from green to orange when ripe.
ECOLOGICAL BENEFITS
Producing masses of bright orange berries, it is a favourite food source for birds such as korimako (bellbird) and tui. The plant also contributes to habitat diversity and helps stabilise soils in erosion-prone areas.
INTERESTING FACTS
Karamu berries can be eaten and are rich in vitamin C.
The plant has a dioecious nature, which means there are separate male and female plants. Both are required for berry production.
PLANTING
Karamu is well-suited for a range of environments, from full sun to partial shade. It thrives in a variety of soil types but prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate periods of dry weather.
This plant is known for being fast-growing and is often used for creating fast-growing shelter or as a hedge.
Karamu is a valuable plant for restoration projects and revegetation efforts. It is a nurse plant that helps in stabilising soil and providing shelter for other native species. It also competes well with invasive species like gorse, making it a useful plant for shrublands and revegetation initiatives.
